Kathy Bates is an American actress and a prominent figure in film, television, and theater. With an extensive career spanning decades, Bates has captivated audiences with her remarkable performances. She has earned critical acclaim and numerous accolades along the way.

Born on June 28, 1948, in Memphis, Tennessee, Kathy Bates developed a passion for acting from a young age. She studied theater at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, where she honed her acting skills. Bates’ dedication and determination paved the way for her remarkable journey into the world of acting.

Career Breakthrough 

Kathy Bates made her breakthrough in the late 1980s with her portrayal of the obsessed fan in the psychological thriller “Misery.” Her captivating performance earned her critical acclaim, including an Academy Award for Best Actress.

Her exceptional performances have earned her recognition and accolades, including two Emmy Awards.  In 2012, Kathy Bates won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in “Two and a Half Men.” Her portrayal showcased her comedic prowess and ability to captivate audiences with her impeccable timing and delivery.

In 2013, she received the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for her portrayal of Delphine LaLaurie in “American Horror Story: Coven” in 2013.  Kathy Bates’ remarkable acting skills have earned her several Emmy nominations throughout her career.

Kathy Bates: Personal Life and Activism

During her teenage years, Kathy Bates found solace in writing self-described “sad songs” while facing struggles with bouts of depression. In 1977, she met Tony Campisi, her future husband, whom she dated for 14 years before tying the knot in 1991. Their marriage lasted only six years, and they divorced in 1997. 

Apart from her personal life, Kathy Bates is a registered Democrat and an active member of the United Methodist Church. She is known for her involvement in various social causes.

In addition to her activism, Kathy Bates has faced significant health challenges throughout her life. In 2003, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and embarked on a brave battle against the disease. Then, in September 2012, she shared via Twitter that she had undergone a double mastectomy following a breast cancer diagnosis two months earlier.

Bates disclosed at the New York Walk for Lymphedema & Lymphatic Diseases in 2014 that she now lives with lymphedema in both arms as a result of the double mastectomy. She became a national spokesperson for lymphedema and took on the role of chairperson for the Lymphatic Education & Research Network’s (LE&RN) honorary board, striving to raise awareness and support for those affected by this condition.
