Kidman was born in Hawaii, as her father pursued his graduate studies at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Subsequently, he became a visiting fellow at the National Institute of Mental Health in the United States. During this time, her parents actively opposed the Vietnam War and took part in anti-war demonstrations while residing in Washington, D.C., a move that occurred shortly after Kidman’s birth. After three years, her family returned to their native Australia.
