Phoebe Cates was born on July 16, 1963, in New York City.  She is an American actress known for her work in film. She began her career in the entertainment industry in the late 1970s, and achieved notable success throughout the next two decades.

Early Life and Work

Phoebe Cates comes from a family deeply involved in television and Broadway production. Her parents, Lily and Joseph Cates (originally Joseph Katz), played significant roles in these industries. Joseph Cates, in particular, was a renowned Broadway producer and a trailblazer in television, having created “The $64,000 Question.”

During her teenage years, Phoebe Cates ventured into the world of modeling.  Her face graced the cover of Seventeen magazine on four occasions, the first being the April 1979 issue. She also appeared within the pages of the magazine, featuring in the editorial sections in 1979 and 1980.

However, Cates eventually grew discontent with her modeling career and made the decision to pursue acting instead. She began her transition to film when she was offered her first role in the movie “Paradise” (1982). This marked the turning point in her career toward acting.

Phoebe Cates rose to prominence with her role as Linda Barrett in the 1982 teen comedy “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.” The film garnered significant attention and became a cult classic.

In 1984, Cates starred in the comedy “Gremlins,” which became a commercial success. Her portrayal of Kate Beringer received positive reviews from audiences and critics alike. She reprised her role in the sequel, “Gremlins 2: The New Batch,” released in 1990.

Personal Life of Phoebe Cates

In 1983, while auditioning for a role in the film “The Big Chill”, Phoebe Cates crossed paths with actor Kevin Kline. At the time, both were involved with other individuals, but their romantic connection blossomed two years later. They eventually tied the knot in 1989, leading her to change her name to Phoebe Cates Kline.

The couple established their residence in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, located just across Fifth Avenue from the iconic Central Park. There, they raised their two children, son Owen Joseph Kline (born in 1991) and daughter Greta Kline (born in 1994). The family shared the screen in the 2001 film “The Anniversary Party,” with Owen also appearing in the 2005 movie “The Squid and the Whale.” He later showcased his directorial skills in the coming-of-age black comedy “Funny Pages.” Meanwhile, Greta pursued her passion for music as the lead singer of the band Frankie Cosmos.

In 2005, Phoebe Cates became an entrepreneur when she opened her boutique named Blue Tree on Madison Avenue in New York City.
